The Benefits of Galvanized Steel Roofing

Metal roofing is actually a catch-all term that refers to any roof made of metal. This can either be your standard steel, aluminum or even copper. Galvanized steel is an example and is widely considered to be among the best in terms of sheer durability and weather resistance.

The Benefits of Galvanized Steel Roofing

In this post, Garlock French Corporation shares the key features of galvanized steel roofs and how you can benefit from installing them.

What Is Galvanized Metal?

This metal roof takes its name from the process known as galvanization, which coats iron or steel with a layer of zinc to reduce or even completely eliminate the potential for rust. During this process, the base metal is hot-dipped in a zinc coating. The coating itself is often a certain thickness corresponding to the needs of the homeowner; it can be lightly coated or boast a medium zinc coating.

This metal roofing system doesn’t require any further coating unlike similar metals, such as aluminum or stainless steel. The coating has a double role: protecting the roof against rust while also enhancing its appearance.

Heat-Resistant Roofs

Metal roofs are naturally heat-resistant as the alloys used in construction are actually poor conductors of heat. That said, galvanized steel roofs take this heat resistance up a notch as they are more reflective than other metals due to the extra zinc coating. The natural heat resistance of the roof can have a positive impact on your home energy efficiency as you’ll spend less time artificially cooling your home since the roof is naturally cool.

Long-Lasting Roof

The zinc coating gives galvanized steel roofs resistance against rust, but that’s not all it does. Metal roofs are already one of the most long-lasting roofs available. Galvanized steel improves on their natural longevity as the coating serves as an extra barrier against the elements.

Your typical galvanized roof can easily last beyond its expected 60 year life span. On top of that, it’s also a relatively low-maintenance roof. All you really need to do to keep it in good condition is regular cleaning and washing.
