Features and Benefits of 4 Popular Metal Roofing Materials

Metal roofing has certainly evolved from the simple corrugated steel roofs of old. Modern metal roofs now offer more variety than the traditional galvanized steel, with aluminum, copper, and stainless steel having their own unique advantages.

Popular Metal Roofing Materials

As one of the roofing contractors that specialize in custom metal roofs, let Garlock-French Corporation share the features and benefits of these metal roofing materials.

  1. Steel – Steel is the most common metal roofing material. Bare steel has to be coated with a layer of zinc—a process known as galvanizing—for protection against rust. A coat of epoxy primer, followed by a baked-on acrylic layer is applied. Steel roofs strike a good balance between durability and cost, typically lasting for 50 years with regular maintenance, and can withstand moderate impact from hailstones and tree branches.
  2. Aluminum – Aluminum roofs are lighter than steel, making it ideal for existing roof decks that can’t support heavy roofing material. It doesn’t rust and therefore doesn’t require the layers of protective coating as steel does. However, being a softer metal, it can be easily dented by impact from solid objects.
  3. Copper – Copper roofs are one of the best metal roofing options available. It’s stronger, has a longer lifespan, and can significantly boost the curb appeal of any home. Copper roofing does not require any kind of protective coating; in fact, most homeowners prefer nothing on their copper roofs because they develop a natural green patina over time, making it even more beautiful. The Minneapolis City Hall is a famous example of an aged copper roof, having been installed in 1950, and can be seen today as a beautiful, completely blue-green roof. Copper is an ideal choice for long-term ownership and best paired with copper gutters.
  4. Stainless Steel – Stainless steel is another long-lasting metal roofing material that wouldn’t rust or corrode. Like aluminum, it can be infinitely recycled without degrading; in fact, stainless steel roofs contain as much as 60% recycled material. Also, stainless steel can be soldered easily and can be installed during winter.

All metal roofing materials are fire-resistant and with the right coating, can have “cool roof” properties that reduce the solar heat absorbed through the roof.
