Do You Need to Prepare Your Roof for Winter?
Your roof is your first line of defense against the weather. In the winter months, you must prepare your roof for what’s to come. At Garlock-French, we understand how vital a high-performing roof can be and stress the need for winter prep.
How Clean Is Your Roof?
When was the last time you cleaned your roof? Your roof should be clean of all leaves, branches, and other debris. Even small amounts of leaves can lead to rot and mold. In addition to debris on your roof, your gutters need regular cleaning too.
Leaves often collect in the gutters, clog up the downspouts and cause water to overflow. The overflow can cause damage to your roof, or the weight can cause the gutter to collapse. For healthy gutters, flush water through the gutter and downspouts to remove debris. Extensions to the downspouts can keep water flowing away from your house, while leaf guards can defend against buildup.
While inspecting your roof, we will also look for loose, missing, or broken shingles. For older roofs over 15 years old, sometimes a replacement is necessary.
Do You Know What’s Going On in Your Attic?
If you aren’t sure about the state of your attic’s ventilation or insulation, you aren’t alone. However, if you want a high-performance roof, you need adequate airflow and attic insulation. When we inspect attic insulation, we look for uniform height and volume. We ensure there are no worn down or disturbed spots. If there are, you need extra insulation.
Likewise, we ensure the fans are working and that you do not have animals living within your attic. If you have any leaks beneath the roof, you need them repaired as soon as possible.
